What do Hiring Managers Expect from a Resume

Resume is the first thing the hiring manager gets to know about you, and if he/she doesn’t like it, there is no next step.

Mikhail:
Let’s talk a little bit about resume. Resume, I guess are usually called CV, but maybe it’s the same thing, isn’t it? I mean one question is, what’s the difference between CV and resume?

Yinso:
There’s no difference actually.

Mikhail:
A little bit of difference [crosstalk 00:00:20], let’s talk about it.

Yinso:
Well, it’s something that we can talk about in a couple sentences. CV is mostly used at Eastern US, by academia’s. And then, pretty much everybody else calls a resume.

Mikhail:
Resume.

Yinso:
Right, So that’-

Mikhail:
Otherwise, there is no difference. I mean, it’s not a completely different document that is based on [inaudible]

Yinso:
I think that different industries wants different things. Right? So, that guy thinks that Modeling Agencies, wants elicit jobs that you had previously work on, and that are your experiences, right? So, different industries might want different things, but on [inaudible] at least on an everyday basis, they are considered interchangeable, except that academia like the core CVs.

Mikhail:
Okay. Let’s talk about Software industry. So, in Software industry, what are the initial expectations from a job or from HR person or a person who offers a job about the [inaudible] at CVS or resumes or any formal documents that they submit? What these documents need to have, what are the must-have items from these documents? [crosstalk]

Yinso:
It really depends on the job. I mean, most of the time. So let’s talk a little bit about the starting process. The starting process is the hiring manager …

Mikhail:
Yeah.

Yinso:
Says, I need to hire somebody. Okay. Now this hiring manager might be a startup founder, who is working by himself. But if not, then there’s usually HR recruiters that will help streamline the process in a large corporation.

And so, they tell them say, Hey, we need to hire, we need to have, we’ve a position to fill. And they say, okay, we’ll open the position and we will start our recruiting and hiring process. And so, the next question is this, what is the requirement?

This is up to the hiring managers to answer. Some of these requirements are well understood by the hiring, by the HR team, because they are the company’s policy. So voice input levels. Okay. What level is this person or that? This person is level of 58, level of 64. Okay. So, these are internal company speak that only the companies insiders will understand what these levels mean.

They usually tie some sort of compensation and which ties to some sort of responsibility. In a larger company, they will try to standardize position, names, responsibilities, et cetera. Okay. For good, for bad for now we’re not going to discuss that [inaudible 00:03:41].

It just happens that large companies wants to streamline their operation. So, they will standardize on all these nomenclatures that they use themselves. Okay. But there would still be very specific stuff that only hiring manager gets to decide, should this person have Java experience? Should this person have C-sharp experience? PHP experience? Should this person have anger to experience or react experience?

Some of these questions really are decided by the hiring manager, because it depends on the projects that the hiring manager have. So, if this hiring manager is working on some sort of an embedded system, then chances are that none of these will apply. Chances are that this hiring manager wants someone was CNC C++ experiences, or maybe even something called Forth, there’s also a possibility.

All these different types of skills, that only the hiring managers know what is needed, are given job. Such that, HR person will have no idea because that’s nice [inaudible] specialty. HR person is only going to know, okay. You hiring manager, you have five requirements. And these five requirements include that someone needs to have 10 years experience and includes that visa also skills, right?

So, maybe web, maybe SQL server and maybe AWS. Right? And, but then in this 10 years experience, besides these skills, I also want to see someone who has previously played a Dev Lead or a Dev Manager position. Okay. And that is a requirement. Now, HR person’s job then is then take that requirement and then try to push through the recruiting pipeline. Say, I need all these things. And these things are then going to go to potentially job boards or goes to Other recruiters that helps fulfill these positions or perhaps through personal network.

Mikhail:
Yeah.

Yinso:
Yeah, but anybody that goes through these intermediaries, all of them will only know these words. None of them would know anything else, but these words. And finally, it gets to the candidate. The candidate somehow either see it, see the job posting or that somebody find them with saying, Hey, by the way, your resume looks like it can be a fit.

All right. Like you said earlier, that it might be indiscriminate, that being reached off for, but they try to see there’s a fit. So, if you want to apply for the job, what do you think that you need to say, get [inaudible] for them to consider? What do you think your resume do say?

Mikhail:
Well, I mean, first of all, I need to, I [inaudible] So, it’s a multi-criteria decision, right? Where I needed to satisfy two different sets of requirements. So, first of all, I need to send formal documents to a HR person and satisfy their requirements.

Now, also I need to have something in my documents that actually addresses the second set of requirements, which is the actual projects or specific languages I worked with, I guess I need both. That would be my intuitive.

Yinso:
Could you say both. What’s the first one?

Mikhail:
The first one, I’m looking at HR, because that’s the first point of contact, right? So, basically I will interact with HR person and there are only five successful in that step. They will put me in touch with the company right-

Yinso:
You are going too fast by the way, you’re not going to talk to the HR, until your resumes matches all these things. It’s a keyword scan. So, basically if your resume, let’s just say that the resume lacked a whole word. If your resume lacks the word, SQL server or AWS, then you are on a lower tier of candidates than someone who is matchable.

Mikhail:
Yeah.

Yinso:
And that is how this whole process will work. That before you talk to anybody, before you talk to a recruiter, before you talked to an HR, before you talk to the hiring manager, your resume has to be a match first. And since we’re on a question about resumes, it means that your resume needs to have these keywords that are written in them.

So, if you want to ask what should exist in your resume, the very first thing that you have to do, is that you have to make sure whatever job you apply for, your resume matches what that job is asking for, matches or exceeds what the job is asking for on a keyword basis. Because, these days there are so many resumes out there, so many candidates go through, even doing the good times, because people always keep their resumes on file. I mean, companies keep the resumes on file.

They don’t start everything from scratch. So, they have a lot of volumes of resumes, especially the successful companies. For successful companies, there are so many candidates for every position that they’re not supplying over there, cause it’s hot, everybody wants to get in, right? So, under those situations, that the only way for you to stand out first being considered first is if your resume skills compare matches very well against the requirements basically.

And is only when it matches against the requirement. Then someone live would talk to you, because computers are there to help automate the process of matching, however, imperfect it is. Okay. It’s going to be that first, because otherwise the amount of work of looking through resumes is overwhelming for the HRS, for the hiring managers, they have other things to do besides looking people’s resumes and talk to people that could be a wrong match.

Okay. Always make sure that your resumes, your resume, when I say resumes, because you probably want to have multiple versions of your resumes for all the different types of jobs you are applying to, all the different positions. Because chances are that these positions will be asking for different things and you want to make sure you highlight then, the resumes in such a way that will match the skill. So, now he can beat the scanning system and then move to the next step.

Mikhail:
Yeah.

Yinso:
Yeah.
