What Are The Best Sources About Job Positions?

When we look for jobs we want to find as many jobs as we could. Are there places / sites that offer such info, and is finding as many jobs as we could a good idea?

Mikhail:
So [inaudible] Talking about job interviews and how to find jobs. One question I was asking is that, what are the best sources of information about job positions? Where do people find information about jobs? Where do they find job? I don’t know some job boards? Is there any advice that you might share? What are the most useful places to find this information? [crosstalk]

Yinso:
I think this is constantly changing? Honestly, I don’t necessarily have much advice about that, just because everybody’s going to have access to different things. There’s all these different types of job boards indeed. Say for example, the old ones like Dice, Dice used to be good.

Some of all these things are actually pretty US centric as well. So what I’m saying is not going to be broadly applicable to everywhere, but [inaudible 00:00:01:08], for example, a stack overflow is designed to be a very specialized type of job boards as well.

Mikhail:
Job board.

Yinso:
Right. Because they’re designed for the developers to showcase their own talent. And then… So that way their promise is that the recruiters is going to be able based on reputation and use that as a way to sort these people who answers the questions. Right?

So I’m sure that there are people whose… Inventing new things out there as we speak, there are new jobs startups, job doorstops out there. That’s trying to create new ways. And also sometimes it depends on what you’re looking for. You can find things to be very specific. So for example, there are sites that focus specifically on remote work, right? So, a remote work is kind of hard to find. You would think that in today’s world, there’ll be a lot of companies willing to offer remote work, but no, most companies are still doing things the old fashioned way, which is to make sure that you show up today, right? So you feel good for a very specific type of work. You have your effort to look for jobs, cutoff for you basically, and this, again, my space is in technology, right?

So the names that I mentioned are probably more or less focusing on technology type of jobs, right. And there are, there are mailing lists out there that will deliver they will deliver basically, what do you call it, then they’ll deliver a posting to you. Right? So I don’t know. I mean, let me put this way. I think that if you are looking for available jobs, then looking for one, these type of job boards, post your resume out there is not necessarily going to harm you, but is it really the best way to look for jobs? So let’s look at other ways of potentially looking for jobs.

So recruiters is one good way to us to look for jobs, especially if you are okay with contracting. So in the software space, there’s a lot of contract work out there and there’s also freelance work, right? So for many of the remote developers, they can make a very decent living because they are working on US projects while they’re living in the much lower cost environment. And freelance is basically what makes that possible. Freedom sites like Guru, sites like what’s called Upwork,

Mikhail:
Upwork.

Yinso:
Right? There’s a bunch of other sites, honestly, it’s just so many of them I might not even keeping track of these different sites. But for some developers, this are probably is a pretty good way of trying to find work. But for other people, utilizing recruiters might be a good approach as well. Now here’s interesting about recruiters. Recruiters, they are matchmakers.

Basically they have access to jobs that corporations wants them to fill. And then they have access to applicants and their job is to help match the jobs against the applicant. So that’s what the job boards are trying to automate. But a lot of time you still need that human intervention to really make it work. And that’s why recruiters don’t have a job. And that’s what, as a matter of fact, I think recruiting industry might actually be getting bigger even in the face of, all these job boards out there. And if you are an applicant that have a pretty good sets of skills going through recruiting might not necessarily be a bad approach. You know, because recruiters wants people that can fill their jobs. That’s their job. Their job is to make money, not from you as the individual, I’ll make money from the company who wants to find candidates to fill these jobs. So that’s one approach as well.

Now, depending on who you are, Sometimes you might want to think about how to find jobs differently. You may want to think about not necessarily finding the broadest opportunities. So most number, [inaudible] instead of finding the best opportunity. So for example, some people just want to work at Microsoft or Amazon or a Google or Facebook or Apple. Some people just want to work at these companies. They don’t want to work at any other companies. In that case, it’s pretty simple. Just go to their sites, go to the career affairs, where these companies go recruit and talk to them, submit your resume to them. And start from there, try to understand. Research all you can about a company and try to then understand what is it that will make you a candidate for them and work yourself toward those being a candidate, being a worthy candidate.

It can be scary. It can be scary in the sense that there might, it seems like you’re limiting yourself from other opportunities out there, but sometimes by limiting yourself, what you’re doing is you’re focusing yourself. You’re focusing your effort, towards a single problem rather than towards multiple spreading your effort toward multiple different possibilities. And there’s something to be said about human focus is that, the more focused you are, the more likely something will come true as well. So you might not necessarily be the best way to apply to many jobs actually. Maybe you don’t want your resume on IED. Maybe you don’t want your resume on Dice or on Stack Overflow. You just want you to resume goes into Facebook, goes into Google, just depends on who you are. I guess there’s just different ways of doing different things.

Mikhail:
Yeah. And I’ve been told, although I don’t have my own experience, but I’ve been told by many software developers, but that gets really annoying when they get a lot of offers from software developers. But this offers are not even pre-screened or not even, not even fit with what they’re looking for. So they’re looking for one job and they get a lot of spam from recruiters about other jobs. And I think something that we might need a few fixes on the recruitment process and industry, because I think there is a lot mismatch here with. What recruiters are looking for. And also a job applicants- [inaudible]

Yinso:
Well unfortunately, just like any industries you’re going to have good people and you got to have not so good people. And the recruiting industry has its shares of the stars, as well as the shares of people who are not going to last long. And it’s the people are not going to last long that’s bothering everybody else. So,

Mikhail:
That’s true

Yinso:
All right. Is this question answered?

Mikhail:
Oh yeah. Yep. I guess that’s.

Yinso:
All right.
